shantanuoThe root account is disabled by default on Ubuntu installations, mainly to prevent you from doing something you didn’t intend to do.You can enable root account as follows: Type sudo passwd root and provide a root password. Then head on over to System > Administration > Login Window, go to the Security tab and check “Enable local system administrator login” You should now be able to login as root from the Login prompt.
